Redcup Slug Murderers’ it’s official!

Category: General

Redcup has been awarded funding by the LDA through the SME Innovation program to discover whether our unique coffee compost can kill the dreaded garden pest slugs.

The Innovation Support Programme helped establish and support ascientific study designed to answer these questions, led by Denis Wright, Professor of Pest Management at Imperial College, London. “We’re trying to ascertain if it works; on what species and what proportion of grounds to compost is the most effective”, says Wright. They are also carrying out phytotoxicity studies to make sure the compost only does for the slugs; as Wright says, “There’s no point in killing off plants in the process”. He says the early results are very positive. “In high doses, caffeine is a highly toxic alkaloid and will repel some slug species” says Wright. It is particularly effective against the species found most commonly in gardens.

This is good news for Redcups’s plans to focus on the consumer market - the compost can protect plants against slugs in the garden. The team is currently finalizing their work on the most effective concentrations of the compost, carrying out pot trials in greenhouses at the University’s Silwood Park campus.
